Snow Studies

River Watch has engaged in a snow/frost monitoring and research project to better understand factors that contribute to flooding in the Red River Basin and contribute to decision support tools available on the Red River Basin Decision Information Network (RRBDIN). River Watch teams collect snow depth, frost depth, and snow water equivalency (SWE) information in conjunction with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (CoCoRaHS), National Weather Service (NWS) and North Dakota State University scientists.  The NWS uses these data to refine and improve flood forecast models.

Specific measurements that River Watch participants contribute:

1) snowpack and water equivalency,

2) frost depth, and

3) infiltration
